Reiki comes from Japan. The word itself means 'universal life energy.' Reiki
is based on the principle that an non-stop energy current flows through and
around each of us. When we experience energy blockages in parts of our body
this leads to illness. During a Reiki session, the practitioner works with
the energy to help promote healing from within.

During a session, Reiki practitioners gently hold their hands at different
places on the client's body. There are four positions around the head, and
others around the torso to address organs such as lungs, kidneys, and liver.
Each position is held for up to five minutes or longer. A session lasts
about an hour.

Reiki is very gentle. Because there is no movement or pressure, Reiki is
completely safe. While being gentle, Reiki is surprisingly powerful. Clients
often experience a deeper level of relaxation than that experienced with
traditional massage and report increased mental calm.

Reiki is ideal for treating anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. It
is also an excellent option for treating organ-level conditions not
addressable with the more physical traditional massage therapy. Reiki is
currently gaining momentum as a popular alternative or supplemental therapy
for cancer patients.
