Massage Therapy for Low Back Pain Relief

by Diana Khoury

A large percentage of the population will experience some form of lower back (lumbar) pain during their adult life. In fact, lumbar pain is one of the top 5 reasons people seek medical care in the United States today. “Total incremental direct health care costs attributable to lower back pain in the U.S. were estimated at $26.3 billion in 1998. In addition, indirect costs related to days lost from work are substantial, with approximately 2% of the U.S. work force compensated for back injuries each year.”1

Financial costs aside, dealing with acute or chronic lumbar pain can be physically and mentally challenging, and disruptive to an active lifestyle.

Meditation Improves Health and Helps Prevent Disease

by Diana Khoury

Meditation has been gradually moving into the mainstream, as a result of its association with yoga and its growing acceptance by celebrities and corporate leaders. The practice of meditation involves quieting the mind and focusing on the breath for the purposes of contemplation and reflection. The resulting state of deep relaxation has been shown to temper the body’s pain and stress responses, and scientific studies confirm its potential to improve health and prevent and manage disease.1

Workplace Massage Reduces Stress and Improves Bottom Line

by Diana Khoury

Our work habits are producing an increase in work-related injuries and stress. Computer use, poor ergonomics and extended sitting contribute to painful neck, shoulder and back tension, as well as repetitive stress conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This leads to a loss of productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher healthcare costs for many businesses. OSHA reports, “Musculoskeletal injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome have become the nation's leading workplace health cost. [Repetitive stress injury] represents 62 percent of all North American...claims and results in nearly $15-20 billion in lost work time and Workers Compensation claims each year.”1

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

by Diana Khoury

Plantar fasciitis (pronounced “plantar fash-ee-itis”) is an inflammation of the plantar fascia - the long, flat ligament that runs along the sole of the foot. The plantar fascia extends from the five toes, down through the arch and attaches to the heel. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include pain in the heel and/or arches and tightness of the calves. Plantar fasciitis causes pain while walking or exercising and can significantly impact one’s daily functioning if left untreated.

Up to 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders every year.1 Sleep problems range from mild to chronic and include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and other, less common conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds us that “sufficient sleep is not a luxury—it is a necessity—and should be thought of as a vital sign of good health.”2

Correct Breathing is Essential to Good Health

by Diana Khoury

In The Healer’s Manual, author Ted Andrews outlines four tenets for maintaining health and preventing disease: proper diet, proper exercise, proper rest, and proper breathing.1 We don’t often hear breathing mentioned as an important aspect of well-being. But just as breath is essential to life, correct breathing is essential to optimal health.

Headache and Migraine Sufferers Find Relief with Acupuncture

by Diana Khoury

Over one in six Americans experiences chronic headaches1. Recurring headaches and migraines interfere with one’s daily functioning and can contribute to increased personal medical costs and sick time taken off of work. The traditional course of treatment for chronic headaches is medication, which has varying degrees of effectiveness plus associated side effects. Alternatively, research demonstrates that acupuncture can effectively reduce the severity and frequency of headaches, if not eliminate them entirely.

Duke University Medical Center conducted a review of over 30 research studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture for chronic headaches. They decisively concluded that acupuncture is equally if not more effective than medication for headache treatment, and that it provides sustained relief without the side effects.
